DeAndre Roselle Yedlin (born July 9, 1993) is an American professional soccer player who
plays for Major League Soccer club Inter Miami and the United States national team. Primarily a
right-back, he has also featured as a right wing-back and wide midfielder. Yedlin spoke about the
country’s long history of police brutality against African Americans: “as a young black man in
America it’s one of those things you just grow up with. You know you have a higher chance of
being stopped by the police, or put in jail or eventually being killed.”
Yedlin admitted he was questioning whether he’d continue to play for the National Team. “It’s
something I’ve thought a lot about during this quarantine,” Yedlin said. “My grandfather, my
grandmother especially, I have a whole family of activists, they’ve always told me to stand up for
what I believe in. There’s no amount of money that can make me shut up about something I
think is wrong. It’s one of those waiting games to see if a change does happen. But if things go
as they stand it’s hard for me as an African American male to represent a country that does
things like this where all people aren’t equal.” DeAndre Yedlin joined Inter Miami CF in 2022 on a
four-year contract as an already decorated player. The Seattle, Washington native brought a
wealth of experience to the young Inter Miami CF squad; before joining the Club Yedlin featured
in 190 matches in top European competitions, including the English Premier League, the EFL
Championship, the Turkish Süper Lig and the Europa League, as well as previously enjoying
extensive playing time in North America, having played for in the MLS, Concacaf Champions
League and U.S. Open Cup over his two first seasons in MLS.
Yedlin primarily plays as a right back, but ever versatile, is capable of playing wingback and
wide midfielder as well; he featured in several of these positions for Galatasaray SK in Turkey,
Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspurs, and Sunderland AFC in England. Before his successful
stint in Europe, Yedlin played for the Seattle Sounders as their first ever Homegrown player.
Yedlin won the Supporters’ Shield and the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with the Sounders in
2014, featuring for the club 69 times across all competitions. Yedlin’s standout performances
have earned him three MLS All-Star selections thus far in his career; twice with the Sounders,
and once with Inter Miami CF in his first season with the club. Yedlin has earned many
accolades during his international career as well, including the U.S. Soccer Young Athlete of the
Year award in 2014, the 2019-2020 Concacaf Nations league, and has represented the U.S. in
its most recent two FIFA World Cup campaigns (2014 and 2022).
Around the Club, Yedlin is known as a leader both on and off the pitch. The Seattle native is the
mastermind behind the First Team’s adoption of wearing fashionable outfits on arrival for
matchday, sparking a surge of creativity and camaraderie among the players as they all express
themselves through their fashion sense. Yedlin’s iconic fashion-forward looks have seen him
featured in GQ. Yedlin also serves as mentor for many of the younger players, guiding the likes
of Drake Callender and Aime Mabika through meditation exercises on training days and game
days. DeAndre Yedlin, the former Seattle and Sunderland defender, has found a long-term home
at Newcastle United. Fulham is known for signing the most American players in the Premier
League, but the Magpies found a young gem in Yedlin. On February 1, 2021, Yedlin joined the
Turkish side Galatasaray on a 2.5-year contract. On March 19, Yedlin scored his first goal for
the club, his first since 2019, conceded a penalty, and was sent off in a dramatic 3–4 defeat at
home to Çaykur Rizespor. The only player on this roster with any World Cup experience. Yedlin,
29, was a young defender on the 2014 team that went to Brazil and made it to the Round of 16.
He was the second-youngest player on that roster at 20 years old then with just four USMNT
caps. He came off the bench in all four matches.
Now, he’s the lone veteran with experience, and his teammates have taken advantage of that by
asking him questions about what the games will be like in Qatar.
“I’m certainly picking DeAndre’s brain and he’s been a great resource talking about what it’s like,
how those games are different, the intensity, the passion,” Walker Zimmerman said. “It’s great to
have someone who has been there. He’s been a big leader for our team because of that
experience.”

Yedlin began playing soccer at age four and learned while watching his uncle from the sideline.
Yedlin was a product of O’Dea High School in Seattle, and was part of Washington Youth
Soccer’s State Olympic Development Program (ODP) from 2006 to 2009. He also played youth
soccer for Emerald City FC and Northwest Nationals before going to U.S. Soccer Development
Academy club Crossfire Premier. Seattle Sounders youth director Darren Sawatzky first saw him
play at age 11 and later said that Yedlin was “an offensive player at the time, he was tricky, he
had explosiveness and could run for days.” Seattle Sounders FC sporting director Chris
Henderson said of Yedlin: “DeAndre has great quickness and speed. He reads the game well,
keeps possession, but he’s able to attack the flank and get crosses in.” During the collegiate
offseason, Yedlin played for Seattle Sounders FC U-23 in the Premier Development League,
and was named to the 2012 All-PDL First XI for his play. On July 15, Yedlin was named to the
MLS All-Star team for their match against Roma on July 31, making him the first rookie to be
named to the All-Star team since 2005 when Michael Parkhurst was selected during his rookie
season. Yedlin was ranked 3rd among MLS players under the age of 24 in 2013, according to
MLSSoccer.
comAfter success for club and breaking out at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, it was
announced on August 13, 2014 that Yedlin had been transferred to Premier League club
Tottenham Hotspur, signing a four-year contract with the club.
On October 3, 2015, Yedlin started his first premier league game against West Ham United.
