Peter Tosh
Winston Hubert Mclntosh , OM, professionally known as Peter Tosh was a Jamaican reggae musician . Along with Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer he was one of the core members of the band the Wailers which he established himself as a successful solo artist and a promoter of rastafari. Tosh , Bob Marley, and Bunny Wailer formed Wailers in 1963 in the kingston ghetto of trench town . in addition to his rich baritone, tosh brought to the Wailers his versatile musician ship and songs such as get up , stand up and stop that train. an aggressive defender of principal rastafari and a militant opponent of the political establishment tosh carried himself with bravado amd was long associated with the dignity demanding song stepping razor by 1974 jealous of the attention focused on Marley as the Wailers popularity grew tosh like Wailers before him left the group to pursue a solo Career. his album most notably legalize it equal rights and no nuclear war featured uncompromising political message about subject ranging from the legalization of marijuana to the abuse of power his work earned the respect of fans and fellow musician he was a favourite of the rolling stones and recorded a duet with mick jagger don’t look back but incurred the enmity of the authorities he criticized he was badly beaten by police during his arrest for possession of marijuana in 1978 nine years later tosh was murdered in his home he posthumously received the jamaican order of merit in 2012 outspoken personality staunchly supported legalization of marijuana and equal rights for jamaican people towering height and dreadlocks deep and somewhat intimidating voice Peter Tosh estate 2019 in association with Neville C. All rights reserved along with bunny Wailers and bob Marley tosh was a primary conposer of the Wailers music catalog and as such helped create reggae popularity beyond the west indies. At some point after his departure from the Wailers tosh developed an interest in unicycles he became a unicycles rider being able to ride forward and backward and hop. Peter Tosh was gunned down on September 11 1987 39 days before what would have been his 43rd birthday on October 19.
Appeared in the music video waiting on a friend by the rolling stones. passed away on the same date as lorne greene in 1964 tosh helped organise the band the wailing Wailers with junior braithwatite a falsetto singer and backup singer beverley kelso and cherry smith . initially tosh was the only one in the group who could play musical instruments according to bunny Wailers tosh was critical to the band because he was a self taught guitarist and keyboardist and thus became an inspiration for the other band members to learn to play the wailing Wailers had a major ska hit with their first single simmer down and recorded several more successful singles before braithwatite kelso and smith left the band in late 1965 Marley spent much of 1966 in Delaware in the United States with his mother Cedella Marley booker and for a brief time was working at a nearby chrysler factory he returned to Jamaica in early 1967 with a renewed interest in music and a new spirituality. Tosh and Bunny were already Rastafarian when Marley returned from the US and yhe three became very involved with the Rastafari faith. Soon afterward they renamed the musical group the Wailers tosh would explain later that they chose the name Wailers because to wail means to mourn or to as he put it express one’s feelings vocally he also claims that he was the beginning of the group and that it was he who first taught bov Marley the guitar. Also according to bunny Wailers the early Wailers learned to play instruments from Tosh tosh started to makevhis own albums with rolling stones record and CBS record equal rights followed in 1977 featuring his recording of a song co written with Marley get up stand up and cover of stepping razor that would also appear on the soundtrack to the film Rockers.
Tosh organised a backing band word sound and power who were to accompany him on tour for the next few years and many of whom performed on his album of this period. in 1978vthe rolling stones record label rolling stones records contracted with tosh on which the album bush doctor was released introducing tosh to a larger audience.
